This lesson introduces the thirteen Maschil Psalms in which the word Maschil, which means instruction and teaching, occurs in their titles. They are Psalms 32, 42, 44, 45, 52, 53, 54, 55, 74, 78, 88, 89, and 142. This study shows how Psalms 54 and 55 interlap with the seven Neginoth Psalms—Psalms 4, 6, 54, 55, 61, 67, and 76—which are played upon the Harp of Humility. In Hebrew, Neginoth means to play, to pick on a stringed instrument. Jesus wants us to grow in His Spiritual Stature and to gain the Harp of Humility. Every time that we humble ourselves, we gain a string upon our harp that is inside us. When that sweet humility has been formed in us, sweet notes of praise and thanksgiving come forth because we have been given the privilege to fellowship Christ’s sufferings rather than sour notes of murmuring and complaining.
The Psalms are like a flower garden. God wants us to be like honeybees who live in the Word of God and go to these different little flowers, these different Psalms, to lay hold of their Nectar of Truth and to allow the Holy Ghost to reveal itself and to digest the Word, which becomes Honey. By including Psalms 54 and 55 in both of His Maschil and Neginoth Flower Gardens, God planted a double portion of Humility there because of their fragrance and importance to Him.
