In His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ taught His Disciples about the outward preparation for fasting, which is the first of the three Precepts that He mentioned in Matthew, chapter 6—fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. For us to keep God’s Precepts means for us to overlook and to visit them in all concerns and duties of our life. Every duty of our life should be concerned with one of the Precepts of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.

This lesson covers the first two points of the stature of fasting: (1) First, Jesus said to anoint our head when fasting. That anointing is a symbol that we want to be anointed as a Priest of God to get ahold of God and to have our mind girded, anointed, and led into that fast so that we can lay hold of the thing for which the Holy Ghost told us to fast. (2) Second, Jesus said to wash our face when fasting, which pictures the anointing that we want God to do inside us while we are doing it on the outside. As we wash our outward countenance, we ask our LORD to wash our inward countenance with His Word and Spirit.

This lesson also gives the stature of the fourfold purpose for fasting: (1) We are to fast for mortification of our flesh. (2) We are to fast for increase of prayer power. (3) We are to fast for Revelation of God’s Word, and (4) We are to fast for rest.
