(Communion Sermon) The text for this sermon is Matthew 11:20-30 in which Jesus gave a stature of things for us to do: (1) Come Unto Me, (2) Take My Yoke Upon You, (3) Learn of Me, and (4) Find Rest unto Your Souls. There are two classes of rest that Jesus mentioned here. The first class of rest is a gift, the one that is given by the High Priest as atonement for sin. It is rest for our poor, weary, sin sick soul, and we cannot work for that. It is a gift from God for the Apostle Paul said, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9).

There is another class of rest that we find by our thirsting for it and by our meeting the conditions to receive it. The LORD wants us to have this rest. What kind of rest was He talking about? He was talking about that rest that comes from our growing up in Jesus Christ’s Spiritual Stature, that rest that comes from our keeping our heart and mind stayed upon the LORD, as the Prophet Isaiah said, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (Isaiah 26:3). We must cease from our own works so that we might stay our mind upon God. If we will crucify the works of our flesh and rest from the works of our own pride, we can enter into His rest. In Hebrews 4:11, the Apostle Paul said, “Let us labour to enter into that rest.” Then, in verse 12, he went on to tell us that God’s Word will help us to cut away the things that hinder us from entering into that rest. Jesus said, “Seek and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

When we go to the Communion Table, we can have what we want and what we believe God for because Jesus said, “This is my Body, which is broken for you. This is my Blood, which is shed for you.” If you eat of Him, this rest will come because He is the Prince of Peace and the Author of Rest.
