(Palm Sunday Sermon) Our text is Matthew 21:1-17 and Genesis 49:9-11, which tell of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. God never does anything unless He warns His people, so they are without excuse before Him. The Lord never went anywhere without His having been announced with a “Behold.” The Angel began the
announcement of Jesus’ birth to Mary and to Joseph with, “Behold.” John the Baptist began his ministry of announcing Jesus with, “Behold.” Jesus’ Disciples began their ministry with, “Behold,” and before Jesus rode into Jerusalem, He sent His two Disciples to announce to the daughter of Sion, “Behold, thy King cometh unto thee.” This lesson covers the stature of the King’s humiliation when He rode into Jerusalem: (1) Even though He had created all things, Jesus rode upon a borrowed ass. (2) The little colt rode along with Jesus as a witness against Jerusalem that no one was worthy to ride with Him. (3) Jesus received the clothes of corrupt men for a saddle even though He knew what was in their hearts, and (4) Jesus endured the fickleness of the multitudes who stripped their garments and laid them in the way for Jesus to ride upon, supposedly saying that they gave Him the Kingship. They cut down Palm Branches, which supposedly spoke of their possessions, and laid them under Jesus’ Feet. Then, they cried, “Hosanna to the Son of David, Blessed is He that Cometh in the Name of the Lord, Hosanna in the Highest.” They recognized His Name as being from Jehovah and supposedly gave adoration and praise to His Deity. Then, they acknowledged Him as a Prophet to the people of Jerusalem and later denied and crucified Him.

Jesus showed us that God’s House should be used for three things: for prayer, for the preaching of God’s Word, and for healing. When Jesus cast the buyers and sellers out of the Temple, overthrew their tables and seats, preached the Word, and healed the blind and the lame, the religious leaders were sore displeased, so Jesus left the city and went into Bethany. If we want to be Jesus Christ’s Bride, we must get rid of that displeased spirit that is sore at Him because He overturns the tables and seats in our life, or He will let us go back and sit on that same seat and eat at the same table; however, our table will be bare.
