This lesson covers David’s seven experiences as a youth: (1) He was a keeper of sheep (unknown, but faithful in the secret place). (2) He was an errand boy (who began his ministry in the low place). (3) He suffered false accusations. (4) He slew a lion, which pictured our imagination. (5) He slew a bear, which pictured our carnal reasoning. (6) King Saul tried to fit David with fleshly armor, which pictured our old man—our brass helmet of fleshly judgment, our coat of mail or breastplate of self-righteousness (our thinking that we are all right when we are not), and the sword of our tongue for defense—however, (7) David put off the fleshly armor and took instead his sevenfold tried spiritual armor: (1) The Staff of God’s Word, (2) The Rod of God’s Spirit, (3) Five Smooth Stones—the Name Jesus, (4) His shepherd’s bag—scrip—in which he carried the Food of the Name, (5) His Sling— The Will of God, (6) Active faith which produced (7) Prophetic faith.
